Choosing the Right Font for a Creative Portfolio: Hustel as a Design Solution

I was working on a creative portfolio site for a graphic designer client. The project needed to feel modern, fresh, and playful—something that would reflect the designer’s unique style while still maintaining a professional edge. I had spent hours selecting color palettes, layout structures, and visual elements, but one decision kept coming back to me: the font.

The hero section of the site needed to make an immediate impact. I tried several fonts, some of which were too heavy or too casual. I wanted something that felt intentional, yet approachable. That’s when I came across Hustel. It was exactly what I was looking for—a display typeface with a playful yet refined character that could elevate the overall design without overwhelming it.

A Playful Yet Professional Typeface

Hustel is a fresh, playful typeface that feels both modern and versatile. Its clean lines and slightly rounded edges give it a friendly, approachable vibe, while its boldness and clarity ensure it stands out in any digital space. It’s not just a decorative font—it’s designed to work well in a variety of contexts, from headers to body text, depending on how you use it.

One of the things I appreciated most about Hustel was its ability to adapt. I tested it on different sections of the portfolio, including the hero banner, navigation menu, and call-to-action buttons. It looked great over a high-quality image background, and it maintained readability even at smaller sizes. This flexibility made it a strong contender for the project.

Testing Hustel in Real Web Layouts

I placed Hustel over an image banner for the hero section. The contrast between the bold font and the background image created a dynamic visual effect. I also checked how it performed on mobile devices. On smaller screens, the font remained legible and scaled appropriately, which is crucial for user experience. I noticed that the slight weight variations in Hustel helped maintain visual hierarchy without sacrificing readability.

For the navigation menu, I used a lighter weight of Hustel to keep it from clashing with the rest of the design. The result was a cohesive look that felt intentional rather than forced. I also experimented with using Hustel for short phrases like “About Me” and “Contact,” where its playful nature really shone through.

Font Pairing and Visual Hierarchy

When pairing Hustel with other fonts, I found that it worked best with simpler sans-serif or serif fonts for body text. A clean sans-serif like Montserrat or Lato provided a nice contrast, allowing Hustel to take center stage in headlines and key messages. This balance helped create a clear visual hierarchy, guiding users through the content more effectively.

I also considered how Hustel could be used in other areas of the site. For instance, it looked great on call-to-action buttons, where its boldness encouraged clicks. In blog headers or course sales pages, it added a touch of personality without being too distracting. Even in promotional landing pages, Hustel brought a sense of energy and creativity that aligned with the brand’s identity.

Readability and Responsiveness

One of the biggest concerns when choosing a display font like Hustel is ensuring it remains readable across all screen sizes and backgrounds. I tested it on dark and light backgrounds, and in both cases, it held up well. On dark backgrounds, the font’s white or light gray variants stood out clearly, while on light backgrounds, it maintained enough contrast to be easily read.

I also paid attention to how Hustel performed in responsive layouts. It scaled smoothly on different device widths, and its open letterforms made it easy to read even at smaller sizes. This was especially important for buttons and form fields, where clarity is essential for user engagement.

Commercial Use and Licensing Considerations

Before finalizing my choice, I made sure to check the licensing details for Hustel. It’s a commercial font, which means it can be used on websites, landing pages, and brand assets without issues. I also verified that it supports multiple weights and styles, giving me the flexibility to use it in various ways. Additionally, its multilingual support was a plus, as it allowed for future expansion of the client’s content.

Another thing I considered was the file formats available. Having access to webfont versions meant I could integrate Hustel seamlessly into the site without compromising performance. It was also reassuring to know that the font included alternate styles, which added depth to the design and allowed for more creative expression.

Final Thoughts on Hustel

Using Hustel in this project was a great decision. It brought a fresh, playful energy to the design while maintaining professionalism and readability. Whether it’s for a boutique online store, a coaching website, or a creative portfolio, Hustel has the versatility to fit a wide range of digital needs. Its ability to adapt to different contexts and its clean, modern aesthetic make it a valuable addition to any designer’s toolkit.

If you’re looking for a display font that can elevate your brand’s online presence without losing clarity, Hustel is worth considering. It’s a great example of how the right font can make a big difference in the user experience and overall design success.
